ADHD in Children
A structured, consultant-led diagnostic assessment for children experiencing difficulties with attention, focus, and everyday functioning.
Our Approach
Understanding Childhood ADHD and Helping Your Child Access the Right Support
Many children struggle with focus, impulsivity, emotional regulation, or following routines at different stages of development. While occasional distraction or high energy can be completely normal, ongoing difficulties at home, in school, or socially may sometimes point to something more.
ADHD in children can affect concentration, behaviour, learning, friendships and family routines, often creating challenges that feel difficult to fully explain. At Mindful Space, assessment helps provide clear diagnosis, practical guidance and personalised support planning so children and parents can move forward with greater confidence.

about
What Does ADHD Look Like in Children?
ADHD in children can affect attention, activity levels, impulse control, emotional regulation and executive functioning. Some children may appear constantly active, impulsive or unable to sit still, while others may seem distracted, forgetful, easily overwhelmed, or frequently “switched off.”
Childhood ADHD does not always present in the same way, and symptoms can vary depending on age, environment and whether inattentive, hyperactive or combined traits are present. These difficulties may affect school performance, friendships, routines at home and overall family life.
Signs Your Child May Need an ADHD Assessment
ADHD symptoms in children are often first noticed through patterns at school, home, or during social development. A structured ADHD assessment helps identify whether these challenges may be linked to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and what support may be most appropriate.
Some of the signs that may indicate an ADHD assessment could be helpful include:
- Difficulty concentrating or staying focused in class
- Frequent forgetfulness or losing important items
- Impulsive behaviour or acting without thinking
- Restlessness, constant movement or difficulty sitting still
- Emotional outbursts or difficulty managing frustration
- Trouble following routines, instructions or daily tasks
- Challenges with friendships or social situations
- Ongoing concerns raised by teachers or school staff
Diagnosis
Why ADHD Is Sometimes Missed in Children
Not every child with ADHD presents in an obvious way. Some children are highly active and impulsive, while others may quietly struggle with attention, organisation or emotional regulation without drawing immediate concern.
Symptoms can also overlap with anxiety, Autism, learning difficulties or normal developmental variation, which can make diagnosis less straightforward. In some cases, children develop coping strategies that mask difficulties, while in others, school demands increase over time and symptoms become more noticeable later.
For many families, assessment provides clarity around behaviours that have felt difficult to explain and helps guide the right support at the right time.
ASSESSMENT PROCESS
Child ADHD Assessment Process
At Mindful Space, we follow a structured three-step pathway for child ADHD assessment in Ireland, designed to provide clarity for both children and parents without unnecessary delays. Our clinician-led process focuses on understanding how attention difficulties, impulsivity, emotional regulation and executive functioning affect school life, home routines and everyday wellbeing.
Step 1
Initial Screening Consultation
The first appointment is a 30–45 minute screening consultation where the clinician will speak with parents or guardians about current concerns, behavioural patterns, school challenges and developmental history. This helps us understand how symptoms may be affecting your child’s daily life both at home and in education.
You will also be guided through the relevant forms and questionnaires, including symptom checklists, background history and functional impact screening. If ADHD is clearly ruled out at this stage, there is no obligation to continue with further assessment.
Following this appointment, we will send you the assessment forms, which include:
ASSESSMENT FORMS INCLUDED
- Medical & Psychiatric History Form
- ADHD Self-Report Questionnaire
- Childhood ADHD Symptom Checklist
- Functional Impairment Questionnaire
- Weiss II Symptom Checklist
- GAD-7
- PHQ-9
You must return the completed forms at least 48 hours before your next appointment. Our team will be happy to assist if you need support completing the questionnaires.
Step 2
Comprehensive Clinical Assessment
The full assessment includes a detailed clinical review of attention, concentration, impulsivity, activity levels, emotional regulation and developmental patterns over time. This helps build a clear picture of how symptoms may be affecting learning, behaviour and daily functioning.
Where clinically appropriate, structured assessment tools and school feedback may be used alongside completed questionnaires and parent observations. This supports a thorough evaluation using recognised diagnostic standards and helps determine whether DSM-5 criteria for childhood ADHD are met.
Step 3
Diagnostic Report and Support Planning
Following the assessment, you will receive a detailed written report outlining whether diagnostic criteria for ADHD have been met, alongside clear recommendations for support and next steps. The report is designed to help both families and schools understand how best to support your child.
This may include school accommodation recommendations, behavioural strategies, treatment planning, family guidance and discussion around appropriate ongoing support. The goal is not simply diagnosis, but helping children access practical support that improves day-to-day life.
Support
Treatment and Support for Childhood ADHD
ADHD treatment for children focuses on helping them function more comfortably at home, in school and in social settings. Support is tailored to the child’s individual needs, age, daily challenges and any overlapping developmental or emotional concerns.
Where clinically appropriate, support may include:
- Psychoeducation for parents and children to better understand ADHD
Behavioural strategies to improve routines, structure and organisation - Emotional regulation support for frustration, overwhelm and impulsivity
- Parent guidance to support home routines and daily challenges
- School recommendations and educational support planning
- ADHD-focused therapy and executive functioning support
- Medication discussion where clinically appropriate
- Follow-up reviews to monitor progress and treatment response
We also recognise that ADHD can overlap with Autism, anxiety, learning difficulties and emotional wellbeing concerns. Looking at the full picture helps ensure support is built around the child, not simply the diagnosis.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age can a child be diagnosed with ADHD?
ADHD can be assessed in children at different ages depending on the symptoms, developmental stage and how difficulties are affecting daily life. If concerns around focus, behaviour or emotional regulation are ongoing, an early clinical review can help determine whether formal assessment is appropriate.
Can a school suggest my child may have ADHD?
Yes, teachers are often the first to notice patterns such as difficulty concentrating, impulsive behaviour, emotional outbursts or challenges following classroom routines. School feedback can be helpful during the ADHD assessment process, but diagnosis should always come through a clinical assessment.
Does my child need medication if they are diagnosed with ADHD?
Not always. ADHD support may include behavioural strategies, school accommodations, parent guidance and therapy, with medication only discussed where clinically appropriate based on the child’s individual needs.
Can ADHD and Autism be assessed together in children?
Yes, ADHD and Autism can overlap, and some children may show traits of both conditions. A full clinical assessment helps identify whether one or both neurodevelopmental conditions may be present and what support may be most appropriate.
What happens if my child is not diagnosed with ADHD?
If ADHD is not identified, the assessment still helps explore what may be contributing to the difficulties. This may include anxiety, Autism, learning differences, emotional wellbeing concerns or other developmental factors that may need support.
