Our Approach

Understanding Autism, Finding Clarity and Accessing the Right Support Across Ireland

For many people, Autism Spectrum Disorder is not recognised straight away. Difficulties with communication, social situations, sensory overload, routines, or emotional regulation may have been present for years, often explained away as anxiety, stress, burnout, or simply “how things have always been.”

At Mindful Space, we provide online autism assessment and treatment in Ireland for adults, children and families looking for clear answers and practical support. Our clinician-led pathway focuses on accurate diagnosis, detailed recommendations and personalised next steps, helping people move forward with greater understanding and confidence, without long waiting lists.

about

What is Autism?

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person processes information, communicates, manages social interaction and responds to the world around them. Autism exists on a spectrum, which means no two people experience it in exactly the same way.

Some individuals may find social communication and change particularly difficult, while others may struggle more with sensory sensitivity, routines, emotional exhaustion or masking behaviours. For many adults, autism may not be identified until later in life, particularly when symptoms have been misunderstood or attributed to other mental health concerns.

Signs You May Need an Autism Assessment

Autism can look very different from one person to another, which is why many people do not realise their experiences may be linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder until much later. A formal autism assessment helps identify whether long-standing patterns fit recognised diagnostic criteria and what support may be most appropriate.

Some signs that may suggest an autism assessment could be helpful include:

  • Difficulty understanding social cues or managing social interaction
  • Sensory overwhelm with noise, light, textures, crowds, or routine environments
  • Strong reliance on structure, predictability and familiar routines
  • Feeling highly distressed by unexpected change or transitions
  • Emotional shutdown, social fatigue or frequent burnout
  • Masking behaviours or constantly adapting to fit social expectations
  • Intense focus on specific interests or repetitive thought patterns
  • Ongoing challenges in school, work, relationships or daily functioning

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Our Autism Assessment Process

At Mindful Space, we follow a structured three-step autism assessment pathway designed to provide clinical clarity and meaningful support. Our online autism assessment process is evidence-based, thorough and focused on understanding how autism may affect everyday life, not simply completing a checklist.

Step 1

Initial Screening Consultation

Your first appointment is a 30–45 minute screening consultation where we explore the reasons you are seeking an autism assessment and the challenges you may be experiencing in daily life. This includes discussion around communication, routines, sensory sensitivity, emotional regulation and personal history.

You will also be guided through the required questionnaires and background forms, including developmental history, functional impact and supporting symptom information. If autism does not appear to be the most appropriate pathway at this stage, there is no obligation to proceed unnecessarily.

Step 2

Comprehensive Autism Assessment

The full autism assessment involves a detailed clinical interview that looks at developmental patterns from childhood through to adult life. This includes social communication, sensory processing, routines, relationships, emotional responses and the practical impact these experiences may have across education, work and home life.

Where clinically appropriate, structured diagnostic tools and standardised assessment methods may be used alongside your completed questionnaires and supporting information. This helps ensure the process follows recognised diagnostic standards and accurately evaluates whether DSM-5 criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder are met.

Step 3

Diagnostic Report and Personalised Support Plan

Following your assessment, you will receive a detailed written report outlining the findings, whether diagnostic criteria for autism have been met, and what practical recommendations may support you moving forward. The report is designed to provide clarity, not just a label.

This may include school or workplace support letters, therapy recommendations, family guidance, treatment planning and structured advice around next steps. The focus is on helping you understand how autism affects daily life and building realistic support around your individual needs.

Support

Autism Treatment and Ongoing Support

Autism support should reflect the individual rather than follow a fixed treatment model. After assessment, your clinician will help identify the most appropriate next steps based on your personal challenges, environment, routines and any co-existing mental health concerns.

Where clinically appropriate, your autism treatment pathway may include:

  • Psychoeducation to improve understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Autism support therapy focused on emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Support for routines, sensory management and executive functioning
  • Parent guidance for families supporting children with autism
School, college or workplace accommodation letters where appropriate
  • Follow-up psychiatric reviews for wider mental health support
  • Support for overlapping ADHD, anxiety, depression or burnout

At Mindful Space, we take a whole-person approach to care. Autism often overlaps with ADHD and other mental health concerns, so support planning is designed to look beyond diagnosis alone and focus on what improves daily functioning most effectively.

Yes, where clinically appropriate, your diagnostic report may help support workplace adjustments, university accommodations or education planning. Additional support letters can also be discussed depending on your individual needs and circumstances.
