about
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, activity levels and executive functioning. While many people associate ADHD with hyperactivity, it can also present through inattentiveness, forgetfulness, difficulty staying organised and challenges with emotional regulation.
ADHD may affect both adults and children differently. Some people experience predominantly inattentive symptoms, while others may have hyperactive or combined presentations. For many people, symptoms can remain unnoticed for years before a formal ADHD assessment provides clarity and helps guide the right support pathway.
Signs You May Need an ADHD Assessment
ADHD symptoms can look different from person to person, and they are often mistaken for stress, burnout, anxiety, or simply being disorganised. A structured ADHD assessment helps identify whether these difficulties may be linked to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and what support may be most appropriate.
Some of the signs that may indicate an ADHD assessment could be helpful include:
- Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
- Forgetfulness and disorganisation
- Impulsive decision-making
- Restlessness or difficulty sitting still
- Emotional dysregulation
- Difficulty managing routines or deadlines
- School, university, or workplace challenges
- Executive functioning difficulties
ASSESSMENT PROCESS
Our ADHD Assessment Process
At Mindful Space, we follow a structured three-step ADHD assessment pathway designed to provide clarity without unnecessary delays. Our online ADHD assessment pathway is clinician-led, evidence-based and focused on understanding both symptoms and how they affect daily life.
Step 1
Initial Screening Consultation
Your first appointment is a 30–45 minute screening consultation. During this session, the clinician will explore your concerns, review current attention and concentration difficulties and determine whether a full ADHD assessment is the most appropriate next step.
You will also be guided through the required forms and questionnaires, including symptom checklists, medical history and functional impact screening. If ADHD is clearly ruled out at this stage, there is no obligation to proceed further.
Following this appointment, we will send you the assessment forms, which include:
ASSESSMENT FORMS INCLUDED
- Medical & Psychiatric History Form
- ADHD Self-Report Questionnaire
- Childhood ADHD Symptom Checklist
- Functional Impairment Questionnaire
- Weiss II Symptom Checklist
- GAD-7
- PHQ-9
You must return the completed forms at least 48 hours before your next appointment. Our team will be happy to assist if you need support completing the questionnaires.
Step 2
Comprehensive ADHD Assessment
The full assessment involves a detailed clinical interview exploring attention, concentration, impulsivity, hyperactivity, developmental history and the impact symptoms may have had across childhood and adulthood.
Where clinically appropriate, structured tools such as DIVA 2.0 or Qb testing may be used alongside your completed questionnaires. This helps ensure the assessment follows recognised diagnostic standards and accurately evaluates whether symptoms meet DSM-5 criteria for ADHD diagnosis in Ireland.
Step 3
Diagnostic Report and Treatment Plan
Following your assessment, you will receive a detailed written report outlining whether diagnostic criteria for ADHD have been met, alongside a structured review of findings and practical recommendations for support.
This may include workplace or education support letters, treatment planning, lifestyle recommendations and discussion of appropriate next steps. The goal is not simply diagnosis, but helping you move forward with clear and personalised support.
Support
ADHD Treatment and Ongoing Support
ADHD treatment is not the same for everyone. After your assessment, your clinician can talk through the most appropriate next steps based on your symptoms, daily challenges, co-existing conditions and personal support needs.
Where clinically appropriate, your ADHD treatment pathway may include:
- Psychoeducation to help you understand ADHD and how it affects daily life
- Behavioural strategies to support routines, planning and organisation
- Lifestyle recommendations around sleep, structure and daily functioning
- ADHD therapy or executive function coaching
- Medication discussion where clinically appropriate
- Follow-up psychiatric reviews to monitor progress and treatment response
- Prescription management for existing patients where suitable
At Mindful Space, we also take a holistic approach to care. ADHD symptoms may overlap with anxiety, depression, Autism, or other mental health concerns, so ongoing support is designed to consider the wider picture rather than focusing on diagnosis alone.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD later in life?
Yes, many people are only diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood after years of struggling with focus, organisation, impulsivity, or emotional regulation without understanding the cause. An adult ADHD assessment can help identify long-standing symptoms and provide a clearer path for treatment and support.
Can ADHD and Autism be assessed together?
Yes, ADHD and Autism can overlap, and some people experience traits of both conditions. Where clinically appropriate, a dual assessment may help provide a more comprehensive understanding of symptoms and ensure the right support plan is implemented.
Do you need a referral for an ADHD assessment in Ireland?
No, you do not need a GP referral to book an ADHD assessment with Mindful Space. You can book a direct initial screening consultation, where a clinician will review your concerns, discuss your symptoms and guide you towards the most appropriate assessment pathway.
Do you provide ADHD support letters for work or university?
Yes, where clinically appropriate, support letters may be provided for workplaces, colleges, or universities. These can help explain how ADHD may affect daily functioning and support requests for reasonable adjustments or accommodations.
Is medication always needed after an ADHD diagnosis?
No, medication is not always necessary after an ADHD diagnosis. Treatment recommendations depend on your symptoms, daily challenges and personal circumstances and may include therapy, behavioural strategies, executive function coaching, lifestyle adjustments, or medication where appropriate.
